Why do we teach Science? Why do we teach Science in the way we do?

At Holy Cross Catholic Primary School our science curriculum is designed to inspire curiosity, foster a sense of wonder, and encourage critical thinking in our students. We aim to provide hands-on, inquiry-based learning experiences that help students explore the natural world, understand fundamental scientific concepts, and develop the skills necessary for problem-solving and experimentation. The curriculum is designed to ensure that children are able to acquire key scientific knowledge through practical experiences; using equipment, conducting experiments, building arguments and explaining concepts confidently. By teaching science, we hope to cultivate a love for learning and empower students to ask meaningful questions about the world around them.

How do we teach Science? What does this look like?

To achieve this, we implement an engaging science program that aligns with national curriculum standards. Lessons are designed to be interactive, encouraging active participation through experiments, field trips, and the use of technology and models. Our teachers create a supportive environment where students feel confident to explore, investigate, and share their ideas. We integrate science across other subjects to help students see the connections between what they learn in the classroom and real-world applications. Special emphasis is placed on developing scientific vocabulary, observation skills, and logical reasoning from an early age.

By the time children leave our school what will they be able to do?

Through this approach, we expect to see students developing a deep understanding of core scientific principles, as well as a positive attitude towards learning science. Our students will be better equipped with critical thinking skills, creativity, and curiosity, laying the foundation for future success in more advanced scientific study and in life. The hands-on, investigative nature of our curriculum also supports collaboration, communication, and the ability to approach problems with an open mindset. Ultimately, our science education program aims to instil a lifelong passion for exploration and discovery.

“Science is about exploring, and the only way to uncover the secrets of the universe is to go and look.” Brian Cox
