Let's Celebrate: 2023 - 2024
Science Workshops
During this term, children in Years 3, 4, 5, & 6 participated in an assembly facilitated by Josh Milsom from General Electric Aerospace in Cheltenham. He visited the school to inform the children about Engineering, talking to them about what it is and the avenues for entry into this field. Josh emphasised the significance of mastering subjects such as mathematics, computing, science and design and technology, in school to pursue engineering. He also talked about apprenticeships, and what they involved. The children gained insight into the components of engineering, including electronic circuit creation, coding, and computer-aided design. Regarding apprenticeships, Josh highlighted the importance of participating in volunteering events and university attendance as part of the apprenticeship criteria, with a focus primarily on mathematics and electronics. Conversations ensued about the children's aspirations for the future and the reasons behind their choices. Following the assembly, certificates were awarded to several children who had demonstrated good efforts in their science lessons, and Josh was photographed alongside them. Congratulations to all the aspiring scientists! Josh then conducted workshops for Years 5 & 6, where children collaborated in groups to construct the tallest free-standing tower using paper cups and lollipop sticks. They also engaged in the creation and testing of various paper airplanes to determine the most aerodynamic design, prompting thoughtful reflections. The children also had the opportunity to tackle quiz questions programmed into a quiz desk, where correct answers resulted in a model plane taking flight. The children really enjoyed the workshops and met the challenges with great enthusiasm.
