Welcome to SENCo
We are proud to be an inclusive school. Our Special Educational Needs Coordinator is Elaine O’Neil. We are dedicated to meeting the needs of pupils with Special Educational Needs and work closely with children, staff, parents and outside agencies to ensure that all pupils, regardless of their specific needs, make the best possible progress in school. We endeavour to be as inclusive as possible. It is our ambition that the needs of pupils with a Special Educational Need/s and or Disabilities are met in a mainstream setting wherever possible, where families want this to happen.

Holy Cross Catholic Primary School Hello my name is Mrs O'Neill. I am the Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo) who works to raise educational achievement by leading and coordinating provision for pupils with special educational needs.

My role at the school moved from being a class teacher to taking over the position of SENCo in 2015. Both roles have been rewarding. My role as SENCo allows me to work more closely with children and their families which I thoroughly enjoy.

Holy Cross (previously known as Holy Rood on Upham Road) has been part of my life in more ways than one. I have been at Holy Cross since 2001. Prior to that, both my children attended the school, and even further back my husband went to the school. I was born in Swindon and attended Holy Family School followed by St Joseph’s Secondary. I returned to fulltime education after returning from Germany with my family. First achieving a BEd (hons) with QTS, and then later the National Award for SEN Coordination.

Outside of school, I enjoy working on my allotments, camping, walking my dog Reg the collie, going to the gym and taking on new challenges such as learning French and play the piano.

Pastoral Care

Mental and Emotional Wellbeing

We all have a sense of mental health, and much like physical health, it can deteriorate. Our emotional, psychological, and social well-being are all parts of mental health. It impacts the way we feel, think, and behave.

At Holy Cross Catholic Primary School, we recognise the significance of emotional and mental wellbeing in our lives and work to promote positive mental health and wellbeing for the entire school community, including the children, staff, parents, and carers. We acknowledge that children's mental health plays a significant role in their overall wellness and that it can have a significant impact on their learning.  Throughout their school life, all children experience highs and lows, and some experience significant life events.  The Department for Education (DfE) recognises that: "in order to help their children succeed; schools have a role to play in supporting them to be resilient and mentally healthy".

 Our aim is to help develop the protective factors which build resilience to mental health problems and to be a school where:
  • All children are valued;
  •  Children have a sense of belonging and feel safe;
  •  Children feel able to talk openly with trusted adults about their problems without feeling any stigma;
  •  Positive mental health is promoted and valued;
  •  Bullying is not tolerated.

Mental health and wellbeing is not just the absence of mental health problems. We want all children/young people to:
  • Feel confident in themselves.
  • Be able to express a range of emotions appropriately.
  • Be able to make and maintain positive relationships with others.
  • Cope with the stresses of everyday life.
  • Manage times of stress and be able to deal with change.
  • Learn and achieve.

Pastoral Team

Effective pastoral care underpins children’s personal development.  At Holy Cross Catholic Primary School, we know from experience that with outstanding pastoral care, children feel they belong and their self-esteem is able to flourish because they recognise that they are valued and cared for.  We believe that good pastoral support focuses on nurturing the individual needs of each child, working alongside parents and carers to ensure children make good progress in all aspects of their lives during their time with us at Holy Cross.  We want everyone involved with our school to feel well supported.

Whilst all staff have a responsibility to promote the mental health of pupils, staff with a specific, relevant remit include:
  • SENCo: Mrs Elaine O’Neil
  • ELSA Team:  Mrs Claudia Serratore and Mrs Pam Coacci
  • Designated Safeguarding Lead:  Mrs Tara Moran
  • SENCo Assistant: Mrs Maria Silva
  • Link Governor: Mrs T O’Regan SEND

Services we offer

ELSAs
Our ELSAs (Emotional Literacy Support Assistants) are: Mrs Claudia Serratore and Mrs Pam Coacci. They are here to support the emotional needs of Holy Cross pupils because children learn better and are happier in school if their emotional needs are also addressed.

ELSAs are Emotional Literacy Support Assistants. They are teaching assistants who have received specific additional training from educational psychologists from whom they receive on going supervision following training. Their role is to support children and young people in school to understand and regulate their own emotions whilst also respecting the feelings of those around them.

The majority of ELSA work is delivered on an individual basis, but sometimes small group work is more appropriate, especially in the areas of social and friendship skills. Sessions are fun and we use a range of activities such as: games, role-play with puppets or arts and craft.

ELSA sessions take place in our dedicated ELSA rooms which provide a calm, safe space for the children to feel supported and nurtured.

In ELSA we aim to provide support for a wide range of emotional needs:
  • Recognising emotions
  • Self-esteem
  • Social skills
  • Friendship skills
  • Anger management
  • Loss and bereavement

If we feel your child may benefit from an opportunity to attend an ELSA group then their class teacher will let you know. We are certain that the children will enjoy and benefit greatly from access to this recognised effective intervention.
